The time has come! You have probably spent the past several weeks eagerly awaiting the day you finally get to meet your little one, and you have spent months planning and waiting for this moment. But are you all set for the big day? After around 36 weeks of pregnancy, you might want to have your pregnancy hospital bag ready just in case your baby decides to be an early bird.

It is fine to throw some items in at the last minute, like your charger and toothbrush, but you’ll want to have your bag mostly packed and easily accessible by this point in your pregnancy. Some items are essential, while some will help you feel comfy and remind you of the comfort of home.

Here is an extensive list of everything you may need in the hospital. Let’s get ready together, for a more comfortable labour, delivery and recovery!

Hospital Bag for Mum

What you prepare for yourself is just as important as what you have for your baby. During the time you spend at the hospital, it is important that you are comfy and cosy. On average, mums who choose to deliver with a vaginal birth stay in the hospital for one to two days. If you deliver with a c-section, your stay might be around three or four days. Keep the potential length of stay in your mind as you select a bag, and what to pack in it. Having a bag big enough to fit everything in with some free space allowed might be your best choice. Before packing, you can also ask your hospital what they provide for mums, and prepare yourself considering those as well.

Let’s make a list of the things you need in your hospital bag for yourself, for a comfier time spent at the hospital:

Clothes: Other than support bras, it is good to avoid anything too restrictive. When packing, keep in mind to include soft and stretchy clothes with breathable fabrics. It is also important to pack a few nursing bras or tanks for your comfort. Other options for nursing bras are nursing-friendly pyjama sets or nightgowns. Nightgowns can come in so handy! Loose, one-piece clothing makes life so much easier, especially postpartum. Nightgowns with buttons on the front, or any kind that allows easy access for breastfeeding are lifesavers, approved by many mums!
If you plan on delivering in water, dark-coloured sports bras or bathing suit tops can come in handy. Remember to pack extra underwear!
For footwear, grippy socks are great for keeping warm and cosy and handling slippy hospital floors. Along with socks, slip-on shoes make hospital life and discharge easier. Your feet might swell postpartum as well, which makes slip-on shoes a lifesaver.

A robe: A comfortable robe is one of the best and the most important items to include in your hospital bag, useful under any circumstance.

A Birth Plan: If you have one, print and keep a few copies in your bag to be able to highlight some key points for quick reference when needed.

Adult nappies, maternity pads and other postpartum products: The hospital will provide you with some products but not every product might not work for everyone. Choose the best brand for yourself, and add them to your bag just in case. Along with nappies and pads, you can also pack a perineal spray, and vitamins suitable for postpartum.

Toiletries: You’ll want your toothbrush, hairbrush, shampoo and deodorant, lotion, face wipes and hair ties in the hospital room. Having your own cosmetic bag will make you feel like you are at home. If you use glasses or contact lenses, keep in mind them and their utensils as well.

An extra long phone charger: We could not recommend this enough! Most hospital beds are notoriously away from electrical outlets, and you’ll want your phone charged for all the heartwarming moments waiting to be captured.

Nipple cream: Your breasts and nipples might hurt, or go dry during breastfeeding, and having extra protection would be helpful for a comfier experience.

Bath towel: Hospital towels can be thin and scratchy, and having your own towel might bring extra comfort.

Snacks: Labour can take long, and having your favourite snacks by you can make the process comfier and easier.

Entertainment: So much time will be spent in the hospital, and it is nice to have something to do when waiting.

Hospital Bag for Your Baby

The long-awaited arrival is around the corner! For this grand entrance, it is important to be prepared while not over-exerting yourself. While you may not know what exactly you’ll need, you know what you will likely need. But good news! In most cases, you do not need all that much when you are just starting in life. Before packing for your baby, it is also important to consider what the hospital will provide for your baby during labour, and pack according to that.

The following list might be helpful for you to get everything ready before the arrival of your little ball of sunshine:

A car seat: The right car seat should be installed in your car so that it is ready when you leave the hospital.

Bodysuits, socks, booties, hats, mittens: Usually most hospitals provide you with clothing, but policies may vary so it is always a good idea to have spares in your bag. You may need to add to what the hospital provides in terms of layers. When choosing bodysuits, it is a good idea to keep in mind that those that fasten up at the front provide the most comfort when changing.

A receiving blanket: The hospital will likely provide blankets, but having a blanket on your own is always good to have on hand to use for skin-to-skin contact.

Muslins: The muslins are soft, light, multifunctional, and do not take up so much space. They can come in so handy, so it is always nice to have one or two by your side.

Going-home outfit: When packing for leaving the hospital, consider the weather conditions to not over or under-pack for going home.

Hospital Bag for Your Partner, or Support Person

If you will have your partner or a support person like a relative or a friend staying in the hospital with you, remind them to pack some things as well. In addition to clothes and toiletries to keep them comfortable during their stay, they can also pack books, their laptop, or general entertainment to keep them company in case there is some downtime. Additionally, they can also pack a lightweight blanket and a pillow just in case the ones that they provide at the hospital for them are scratchy and thin. During this stay, it is important that everyone is as comfortable as possible for the best experience.

What NOT to Pack in Your Hospital Bag?

It is always good to be prepared, but packing too much can be a hassle to handle later on. Additionally, there are some things that the hospitals do not allow, so it is a good idea to check beforehand and pack accordingly. What should we not pack? Let’s see.

Too many clothes

Valuables

Electronic devices

Too much food

Nappies and wipes: Most hospitals provide nappies and wipes during your stay, so double-check this with your hospital before packing nappies or cotton wools.

Whether you are an experienced mother or a new mother nursing for the first time, you may experience a number of common problems. Like the natural course of life, breastfeeding comes with its own ups and downs, and knowing how to take care of them along the way makes your life easier, bringing you so much comfort. Breastfeeding can be a long journey, and taking care of yourself along the way ensures a safe, comfy and most importantly, healthy journey. Let’s discover what can be wrong, and what can be done about each of them.

Why is Nipple and Breast Care Important During Breastfeeding?

During pregnancy, most women’s nipples go through many changes from becoming larger to more sensitive. And when your newborn starts feeding from them or you start pumping, more pressure and suction are created, which strains the nipple even more. Breastfeeding can take a long time as well, some babies even nurse for up to an hour, and your baby may feed up to 13-14 times a day. This daily strain on your nipples can go on for up to 2 years if your body keeps producing milk, which brings us to the importance of care. With this amount of strain, it is normal for your breasts to hurt or feel sore from time to time, but treating problems swiftly is crucial to prevent further damage, and ensure the comfort of yourself and your baby. The more wet your nipples get, the more dry and damaged they get, just like what happens to our lips when we keep licking them. Like the way we have to moisturise and soothe our lips to keep them healthy and prevent them from hurting, it is the same for our nipples when breastfeeding. Prevention is better than cure and as long as there is not a serious problem present, soreness and pain should not last long after you and your baby become accustomed to breastfeeding.

Sore Nipples

Your nipples can feel sore after every feeding, and they can be red and pointy instead of round and smooth. Soreness in the nipples usually happens when your baby is not latched onto your breast properly and can be easily fixed. If your breast is sitting at the very back of your baby’s mouth, your baby will open their mouth very wide and take in a good deal of breast tissue, so there is nothing to get pinched, and it should not cause any nipple soreness at all. However, if your nipple is sitting in front of your baby’s mouth, you will feel the pinch every time your baby’s tongue comes up, and your baby will not have an easy time feeding either. You can insert your finger into the corner of your baby’s mouth to break the latch as soon as you feel pain and then try latching on again. Your baby should take at least one inch of areola into the mouth.

Avoiding using soap, which can be drying and irritating, on your breasts can also ease the pain as well. You can wash with clean water, or use products specifically formulated for your breasts and nipples. You might also want to let some milk dry on your breast after feeding, which can help reduce some soreness, and use lanolin-based creams specifically for nipple inflammation and soreness. Using nipple shields when not breastfeeding can also protect your sensitive nipples from any further pain or damage.

Infections or Painful Lumps

Your baby might be latched on properly and you might still develop sore or tender spots or painful lumps. These commonly result from a plugged milk duct or the early stages of an infection known as mastitis.

If the pain is from a blocked milk duct, you might try applying moist or dry heat compresses to your breast three times a day for 10 minutes, and massage your breast when taking a warm shower. As the duct unplugs, you may express some milk, which helps relieve pain. Continuing to feed on that breast is important for breastfeeding and helps further open the milk ducts.

If you have pain and tenderness and also feel fatigued, are running a fever, and have some flu-like symptoms, you might have a breast infection. The same methods might still help with the infectious ducts but if your fever does not break in 24 hours you might need further medical help. Call your doctor, but in the meantime, experts say do not stop breastfeeding, as your milk is filled with antibodies, it does not harm your baby.

Yeast Infections or Thrush

Yeast infections are less troubling, but still an uncomfortable condition on the surface of the breast skin. This problem can develop anytime, even after months of successful nursing. Thrush is a form of yeast infection that thrives on milk, and this infection will likely affect you and your baby. Signs of thrush include red or pink shiny skin that usually itches, and may flake or peel. To understand whether or not your baby is infected as well, look for white spots on the inside of the cheeks, or sometimes a persistent nappy rash. If you have a yeast infection, you might also have symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection with clumpy white discharge and extreme itchiness.

During this time you do not have to stop breastfeeding but both you and your baby need treatment. In this situation, do not try to heal it with home remedies as they may worsen the situation, and consult your physician for the best treatment both for you and your baby.

Engorged Breasts

Engorgement can develop when your milk begins to flood your breasts. Once the milk starts to come into the ducts, lymph fluids and blood also fill your breasts which can cause the breast tissue to swell. And since the tissue pushes down on the milk ducts, the ducts sometimes can shut. In conclusion, breast milk builds up inside the breast and engorgement occurs.

Your best solution might be placing cold packs on the breast, for about 20 minutes. This can help reduce the swelling and allow the ducts to open. Also right before nursing, you can put a warm pack on your nipples for a few minutes to help with the milk flow and provide a better feeding experience.

Showers can affect engorgement badly, as warm pouring water can dilate blood vessels and increase the swelling and congestion in your breast. During this time, the most important thing is to keep on nursing, as this can prevent accumulation and lessen the chances of engorgement.

Our bodies are capable of adapting to many massive changes, which does not mean each change won’t leave a mark. Stretch marks are a phenomenon that is common and extremely normal, especially among pregnant women. For some they are just as casual as another event, for some it is a cause of distress. But just like everything, we have every right to know their underlying causes. What causes us to have those streaks in our bodies? Can we get rid of them? Do we need to get rid of them? How do we get rid of them? Many questions come to mind at the sight of those colourful streaks. Together, let’s explore each one of them and more.

What Are Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks also known as striae gravidarum, are streaks or bands that develop on the skin during pregnancy, or any other abrupt physical change our bodies go through. They tend to form when your skin expands or shrinks rapidly. Itchy, thin and pink at the start, the marks tend to get long, and pink, red or brown in colour. They typically appear around the breasts, abdomen, buttocks and thighs. While these are their most common traits, their appearance can differ from one individual to the next.

When we say that almost every woman experiences stretch marks when pregnant, we are not exaggerating. Roughly 90% of women form stretch marks in their bodies when pregnant. Research suggests that women with a higher abdominal circumference, higher body mass before pregnancy and greater weight gain are particularly susceptible. Your genes and age can also be a contributing factor.

What Causes Stretch Marks?

Many factors contribute to stretch mark formation on your body from your family history to your physical traits. Causes are a bottomless ocean, but we have prepared a list of the most common causes of stretch marks for you. Let’s explore:

Rapid weight gain: As the most common cause of stretch marks during pregnancy, rapid weight gain takes the prize. Sudden expansion of the skin and weight fluctuations can abruptly happen during pregnancy, especially during the second trimester and affect the skin around the breasts, thighs, abdomen and buttocks as it does not have adequate time to adjust.

Genetic factors: Some individuals are genetically more inclined to develop stretch marks. If your mother, or sister have experienced them during pregnancy, it is highly possible that you will develop them as well.

Hormonal changes: Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy can affect the elasticity and structure of your skin, making you more susceptible to stretch marks.

Changes in your cortisone levels: When cortisone levels increase in your body, it becomes a hormone that weakens the skin’s elasticity. Cortisone levels rise during pregnancy which is another issue that can contribute to the development of stretch marks.

Carrying multiple babies: Carrying more than one baby, and having double or more the amount of responsibility in your body, can put more pressure on your skin, causing you to develop stretch marks.

Your age: If you are a younger expecting woman, your chances of getting stretch marks are a bit higher than the women who get pregnant older. If you are in your early 20s or younger than that, since your skin is still open to development, you are more open to stretch marks. Women older than 35 also have a high chance of getting stretch marks when pregnant, since their skin has gradually aged till now.

Are Stretch Marks Dangerous?

No! They might be a symptom of a few specific medical conditions, but they are not threatening or harmful, and do not cause any known medical problems.

Do Stretch Marks Fade After Pregnancy?

Since it is a form of skin scarring, stretch marks may not completely fade on their own. However, while they tend to be very apparent in the final trimester, they can slowly begin to fade after you get to hold your baby in your arms.
How to Prevent Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are caused by abrupt physical changes, so sometimes preventing them can be a hassle. But by taking certain precautions, we might be able to lessen the effects on your body and ease yourself a bit during a chaotic time in your life if, though we hope it is not, stretch marks are a cause of stress for you. Here is a small but extensive list of things we can do to prevent stretch marks:

Natural topical creams: Applying specially formulated creams containing ingredients like shea butter, hyaluronic acid, and aloe vera could prevent the formation of stretch marks. Using them daily starting around the third month of your pregnancy, can help with maintaining your skin’s elasticity, drastically decreasing the sight of stretch marks.

Hydration: Hydration is essential during pregnancy to keep up with the increased blood volume in your body and help build the water sack for your baby. Keeping yourself hydrated also contributes to the elasticity, making it less prone to the damage caused by the stretch.

Balanced diet: Maintaining a healthy, well-balanced diet and not skipping foods rich in collagen and gelatine can help you maintain your weight at a steady rate and help your skin stay elastic, keeping up with your bodily changes.

Increasing your vitamin C intake: Vitamin C-rich foods and vegetables contain antioxidants that help repair skin and tissue damage, which helps maintain your skin’s elasticity and prevent stretch marks. When preparing your meals, try to incorporate vitamin C-rich foods like oranges, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach and other leafy greens into it.

Massaging your skin: Gently massaging the areas where pregnancy stretch marks are likely to pop up like the abdomen, breasts, thighs, and buttocks with anti-stretch mark creams can also be highly beneficial to your skin’s elasticity, helping you prevent stretch marks.

Light exercise: Staying active during pregnancy helps you avoid huge fluctuations in your body weight, helping your skin keep up with the changes in your body. Regular exercise helps boost circulation and blood flow to your skin, making it less vulnerable to any possible damage, thus stretch marks are less likely to happen.

How To Treat Stretch Marks

Your stretch marks are a badge of your journey of bringing a life into this world, and trust us when we say you are just as beautiful with or without them. Even so, if you want to get rid of them for many reasons, it is an option. They might be a hassle to prevent, or almost impossible to get rid of, but there are many ways that serve as a remedy, reducing their effects to as little as possible. While exploring our list below, keep in mind that some of these methods should be practised after pregnancy, not while breastfeeding, and not without getting approval from your doctor. Here is our extensive list for treating stretch marks, created just for you:

Anti-stretch-mark creams and lotions: There are various creams to help reduce the appearance of stretch marks. When shopping, look for products containing ingredients such as shea butter, cocoa butter, vitamin E, avocado oil, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin C which may help improve collagen production and maintain skin elasticity.

Laser therapy: Laser treatments on stretch marks can stimulate collagen production and improve their appearance. This is a non-invasive procedure which is done by using laser beams to target the affected areas and promote skin generation. Procedures like this may require multiple sessions for best results.

Microdermabrasion: This procedure is done by exfoliating the outer layer of the skin to promote the growth of new and healthier skin cells. This procedure can help reduce the appearance of stretch marks.

Chemical peels: This procedure is done by applying a chemical solution to the skin, causing the outer layer to peel off, which stimulates skin generation and can improve the appearance of stretch marks.

Water birth is a form of birth that occurs using a deep bath or birth pool. In addition to relaxing and soothing effects, this is a process that makes it easier for you to move in water during delivery. See some of the advantages of birth in warm water:

With the support provided by the water, it is easy to move freely and take positions that suit you during delivery.

When in an upright position in the water, gravity will lead your baby to move easily.

Being in the water can lower your blood pressure, suppress your feelings of anxiety and fear, and help relieve your pain.

It can reduce back pain by reducing the pressure in the body.

You can feel safer as it will relax you.

Since it increases the blood flow to the uterus, your contractions are regulated.

Since there is no general anaesthesia in this delivery method, possible side effects that may occur in the baby can be prevented.

The risks of postpartum bleeding, birth tears and injuries that may occur in the birth canal are reduced.

It is ensured that the birth process takes a shorter time.

How Should the Temperature of Water Be During Water Birth?

The temperature of the water is very important in this birth method. The water temperature in the pool should be maintained at 36 degrees. As long as it’s maintained at a sufficient temperature, giving birth in water can help to relax the person and reduce pain.

How Does Water Birth Happen?

In this birth method, which is done in a pool filled with water at a temperature of 35-37 degrees, the relaxing effect of hot water is utilised.

Artificial pain or any medicine is not given to the mother as hot water allows the natural pain to begin.

The mother sits in the water and begins to relax with the calming impact of the water.

The doctor or midwife who will give birth enters the water with their own equipment to deliver.

To bring the baby to the surface, their body is expected to come out completely. The navel cord is cut when they can be taken out of the water. The baby receives oxygen from the cord till the cut. When the baby is brought to the surface, they unite with their mother.

After giving birth, the mother is transferred to a regular hospital room, where both the mother and the baby undergo check-ups.

When should water births not be performed?

If there are twin or triplet pregnancies,

If there was a previous caesarean section,

If there are cases of genital infection,

If the baby feels sideways or if the baby weighs more than 4 kilos,

If the mother has diseases such as high blood pressure, heart, diabetes or asthma,

If there is a risk of premature birth.

Is It Harmful to Enter Hot Water During Pregnancy?

Exercising in the water can be a good activity during pregnancy. However, swimming in extremely hot water should be avoided as it can raise your body temperature excessively. Also, be careful about spas in the winter holidays as extreme heat can increase the risk of hypothermia. Such a situation can be dangerous for both mother and baby.

Finally, we should not forget the importance of drinking enough water during pregnancy. Drinking lukewarm water is very beneficial for health. It is the most important thing that keeps you away from dehydration, fatigue and infection. 6-8 glasses of water every day will be very beneficial both for you and your little precious one on the way.

Welcome to our blogsite, dear parents-to-be! Pregnancy is a beautiful journey filled with excitement, anticipation, and, at times, a few unexpected challenges. If you’re currently expecting and find yourself grappling with the discomfort of a cold, this article is tailor-made for you.

The change in seasons can lead to the occurrence of flu and colds. This situation, which is quite uncomfortable even under normal circumstances, becomes more concerning during pregnancy, causing expectant mothers to worry about their babies.

What is the Distinction Between Influenza and the Common Cold?

Influenza and the common cold are often mistaken for one another and even used interchangeably, but they represent two distinct conditions. Although they share similar symptoms, the outcomes of these illnesses are markedly different. While the common cold primarily affects the nasal passages, influenza affects the entire body. Both illnesses are caused by viruses and target the upper respiratory tract. Influenza results from three virus types: Influenza A, B, and C, whereas the common cold can be triggered by around 200 different virus strains.

The common cold predominantly affects the nose, with most cases caused by viruses from the rhinovirus group, ‘rhino’ meaning ‘nose’ in Greek. Symptoms typically manifest about two days after exposure to the virus and commonly include a runny nose, nasal congestion, and sneezing. Fever is typically absent, although a sore throat or mild discomfort may occur at times. Throat redness is rarely observed during examination. Sinus pain and earache are frequent symptoms. Depending on the virus strain, additional symptoms such as watery eyes, cough, post-nasal drip, reduced appetite, and fatigue can also manifest.

Initially, nasal discharge may be more liquid but can change in consistency and turn yellow-green within a few days. Symptoms usually resolve naturally within 7-10 days.

Influenza, caused by influenza viruses, is relatively common. A flu epidemic at the beginning of the last century affected the entire world, resulting in over 20 million deaths. According to data from the American Center for Disease Control, 10-20% of the population contracts the flu each year, with an average of 114,000 hospitalizations due to flu-related issues. In a year, more than 20,000 people succumb to the flu. The virus structure frequently mutates, leading to widespread outbreaks.

What Are the Symptoms of Influenza?

Symptoms typically commence with a fever and are followed by facial redness and fatigue. Some individuals may experience dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. Fever usually lasts 2-3 days but, in rare cases, may persist for up to 5 days. After the fever subsides, general systemic symptoms develop, and respiratory complaints intensify. A dry cough is a significant symptom. Sore throat, cold symptoms, and muscle and joint pain are also common. Influenza viruses can inhabit the nose, throat, trachea, and even the lungs, potentially causing pneumonia.

It damages the protective epithelial layer lining the respiratory system. While symptoms other than cough typically resolve within one week, cough may persist for a few additional weeks.

What Are the Methods of Transmission for Both Diseases?

Both diseases are transmitted through airborne droplets. When an infected person sneezes, millions of viruses enter the air and can infect others through their eyes, nose, and mouth. The contagiousness is highest during the first two days after contracting the virus. Additionally, hands can play a role in transmission. Both illnesses can lead to complications. One significant difference is that influenza is preventable through vaccination.

Does Influenza Pose Risks During Pregnancy?

Pregnancy itself does not increase the risk of contracting influenza, but complications become more likely if a pregnant woman does contract the virus. Pregnant women are at higher risk for hospitalization due to influenza compared to women in the same age group who are not pregnant. Pregnancy-related changes in the circulatory, respiratory, and immune systems make pregnant women more susceptible to complications. Moreover, if a pregnant woman contracts the flu late in pregnancy, there is an increased risk of transmitting the disease to the newborn.

Is It Safe to Receive the Influenza Vaccine During Pregnancy for Prevention?

The influenza vaccine, which does not contain live viruses, is considered safe during pregnancy. The American Association of Gynecologists and Obstetricians (ACOG) recommends receiving the flu vaccine during the second or third trimester, as indicated in a December 2000 publication. In cases of high-risk conditions such as diabetes, asthma, and hypertension, vaccination against influenza is recommended regardless of gestational age.

For women without high-risk factors, vaccination at the end of the first trimester is recommended. Antibodies developed in the mother after vaccination can pass to the baby, providing protection against the flu during the infant’s early months. The influenza vaccine is generally considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

When Is the Best Time to Get Vaccinated?

The flu season typically spans from November to April, with the highest prevalence from December to early March. The most effective period for vaccination begins when the epidemic starts, with a decline in cases over the next 3-4 weeks. The optimal time for vaccination is between October and mid-November. After vaccination, it takes 1-2 weeks for antibodies to develop and provide protection. The effectiveness of the flu vaccine ranges from 70-90%. Importantly, the flu vaccine does not cause the flu. Any upper respiratory infections occurring in the first two weeks post-vaccination are unrelated to the vaccine. The vaccine is prepared using eggs, so individuals with egg allergies should avoid it.

How Are These Diseases Treated?

Unfortunately, there is no specific treatment for either disease, and no medication or intervention can shorten their duration. While the United States has antiviral drugs against the influenza virus, these should only be used during pregnancy if the pregnant woman is at high risk. Supportive care is essential for managing both the flu and the common cold:

Antibiotics are ineffective against viruses, so they should not be used unless a secondary bacterial infection is present.

Preventing illness is crucial, so avoiding crowded places and frequent handwashing is recommended during epidemics.

Rest is the most effective supportive treatment; if possible, bed rest is advised.

Elevating the head with two or more pillows can reduce post-nasal drip discomfort.

Ensure that the environment is warm and well-ventilated.

Prevent dry indoor air and maintain moisture.

Adequate fluid intake is essential.

Maintain a nutritious diet during illness, and if appetite is reduced, opt for a carbohydrate-rich diet to meet energy needs.

Lozenges can help soothe a sore throat.

Nasal congestion can be alleviated with saltwater or saline nasal sprays.

Pain and fever can be managed with paracetamol.

After symptom resolution, avoid immediately resuming normal activities and continue to rest for complete recovery.

When Should You Consult a General Practitioner?

If you are in a high-risk group.

If your fever exceeds 38.5 degrees Celsius and persists for several days.

If you experience difficulty breathing.

In the case of chest pain.

If severe earache, discharge, or bleeding from the ear occurs.

If a rash or redness develops.

If neck stiffness is present.

If you believe you are not improving within a few days and are seriously ill.

Feel free to share your experiences and questions as comments. Wishing you a pleasant and healthy day!

Hello! Today we will be going over an important matter for future mothers.

You are all aware that you have to eat well and have a balanced diet for your baby’s growth and development as well as preserve your health during this time. However, how much of the weight gained during pregnancy actually goes to the baby? Should we eat for two during pregnancy? Which nutrients actually support the baby’s growth? What are these nutrients? How to make the baby gain weight during pregnancy? Let’s deep dive!

Where does the weight gained in pregnancy go?

Taking into account that your baby is about 3.5kgs after birth;

The baby: 3.5 – 4 kg

Placenta: 0.5-1 kg

Amniotic Liquid: 1 kg

Breasts: 0.5 kg

Uterus: 1 kg

Increase in maternal blood volume: 1.5 kg

Fat Storage: 3 kg or more

Increased muscle tissue and intracellular fluid: 2- 3.5 kg

Total is around 12.5 kg

Foods That Help the Baby Gain Weight and Support Its Development During Pregnancy

Foods that Benefit the Baby During Pregnancy:

Your baby had already started and completed the fastest development stage before you even realised you were pregnant. The most important developmental pieces, especially cognitive development, have already started. This is why planned pregnancies are important and beneficial. For example, it’s recommended to take folic acid supplements before getting pregnant.

Also, maintaining a healthy diet is crucial for your baby to grow healthily. A woman who is pregnant should take 300 more calories compared to one who is not. So, you don’t have to eat for two during pregnancy. A cup of milk, a fruit, a slice of bread or a meatball would be sufficient for that extra 300 calories.

How you eat determines what your baby eats. Baby feeds from the mother.

Now let’s look at the foods that will help your baby gain weight and especially support their brain development.

Egg

The egg is the most important protein after breast milk. It is rich in vitamins and minerals and has an important place in pregnancy.

Egg has lutein, an antioxidant, that plays an important role for a healthy pregnancy.

Egg has about 25mg of folic acid. Folic acid prevents defects at birth and brain diseases. To ensure the proper development and weight gain of your baby during pregnancy, it is advisable to incorporate a boiled egg into your breakfast.

If you are unable to consume eggs in boiled form, you may prepare a vegetable omelette with a teaspoon of oil. This way, you will increase your fibre intake and potentially extend your satiety period.

Spinach

Spinach contains iron, vitamin C, and folic acid, which support the development of your baby’s spine. Additionally, spinach aids the expectant mother in coping with infections.

Spinach is a natural source of folate. To ensure the proper development and weight gain of your baby during pregnancy, consider incorporating spinach into your diet.

Fruit and Vegetables

Try to incorporate vegetables and fruits into every meal in your daily diet. During this period, it is crucial to consume foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals and maintain a high-fiber diet.

Add a generous serving of salad to each of your meals.

For your snacks, consider consuming a medium-sized banana. Bananas are rich in potassium, which supports the development of your baby’s muscles and skeletal system.

Walnut

The omega-3 fatty acids found in walnuts support the development of the baby’s eyes and brain.

A serving of walnuts consists of 2 whole walnuts.

Regular consumption of walnuts during pregnancy can reduce the risk of inflammation in blood vessels.

Due to its rich protein and fibre content, walnuts can prolong your satiety, helping you stay full for longer. Walnuts also contain the necessary copper mineral for your baby’s development.

Dairy Products

Expectant mothers who wish to promote their baby’s growth and ensure adequate weight gain should include dairy and dairy products in their daily diet.

Dairy and its derivatives are particularly rich in calcium, which is crucial for the developing bones of the baby.

Alongside your main meals, make sure to incorporate a serving of yoghurt. For your snacks, opt for foods with a high probiotic content, such as kephir, to facilitate digestion. If you cannot consume kephir plain, you can mix it with fresh fruits and blend it for a delicious and nutritious treat.

Pumpkin Seeds

Iron deficiency is a common issue during pregnancy, and one way to address this problem is by consuming foods high in iron content.

Pumpkin seeds contain 8.8 mg of iron per 100 grams and are also an excellent source of zinc.

In your daily diet, you can easily incorporate pumpkin seeds by adding them to your morning oatmeal or blending them into snacks or beverages.

Meat

As the pregnancy progresses, especially after the 20th week, you should slightly increase protein intake. About 100 grams of meat provides around 20 grams of protein.

Meat and meat products are rich sources of iron, which supports the development of your baby.

Fish, on the other hand, promotes both brain development in your baby as well as their eyes. It is recommended to consume fish at least two times a week, but make sure to avoid bottom-dwelling fish. When preparing fish, opt for baking or grilling as a cooking method.

For weight control, we do not recommend frying.

Other Foods You Should Eat for Your Baby’s Development & Weight Gain in the Womb

Avocado

Broccoli

Lentil

Nut

Green Leaf Vegetables

Kiwi

Soybean

Chickpea

Flaxseeds

Oats

Whole grains

Some expectant mothers, fearing weight gain, may consider eliminating bread and rice from their diets during pregnancy. However, it’s important to note that your body still requires the vitamins and minerals that come from these grains during pregnancy. So, completely cutting out bread or rice is not the right approach. What we should be mindful of is opting for whole-grain products. If you prefer not to consume bread with your meal, you can consider having 3-4 tablespoons of rice as a slice of bread is equivalent to 3-4 tablespoons of rice.

You are all aware that you have to eat well and have a balanced diet for your baby’s growth and development as well as...

You are all aware that you have to eat well and have a balanced diet for your baby’s growth and development as well as preserve your health during your pregnancy period. However, how much of the weight gained during pregnancy actually goes to the baby? Should you “eat for two” during pregnancy? Which nutrients actually support the baby’s growth? What are these nutrients? How to make the baby gain weight during pregnancy? Let’s deep dive!

Where does the weight gained during pregnancy go?

Taking into account that your baby is about 3.5 kg after birth:

The baby: 3.5-4 kg

Placenta: 0.5-1 kg

Amniotic Fluid: 1 kg

Breasts: 0.5 kg

Uterus: 1 kg

Increase in maternal blood volume: 1.5 kg

Fat Storage: 3 kg or more

Increased muscle tissue and intracellular fluid: 2-3.5 kg

The total is around 12.5 kg.

Foods That Help the Baby Gain Weight and Support Its Development During Pregnancy

Foods that Benefit the Baby During Pregnancy:

Your baby has already begun and completed the fastest development stage before you even realized you were pregnant. The most crucial developmental milestones, especially cognitive development, have already commenced. This underscores the importance and benefits of planned pregnancies. For example, it’s recommended to take folic acid supplements before conception.

Maintaining a healthy diet is crucial for your baby’s healthy growth. A pregnant woman should consume 300 more calories than a non-pregnant woman. So, you don’t have to “eat for two” during pregnancy. Adding a cup of milk, a fruit, a slice of bread, or a meatball to your diet would be sufficient for that extra 300 calories.

How you eat determines what your baby eats, the baby feeds from the mother.

Now let’s explore the foods that will help your baby gain weight and support their brain development.

Egg

Eggs are the most important protein source after breast milk. They are rich in vitamins and minerals crucial during pregnancy. Eggs contain lutein, an antioxidant important for a healthy pregnancy, and about 25mg of folic acid, which helps prevent birth defects and brain diseases. Incorporating a boiled egg into your breakfast or preparing a vegetable omelette with a teaspoon of oil can contribute to your baby’s proper development and weight gain during pregnancy.

Spinach

Spinach contains iron, vitamin C, and folic acid, which support your baby’s spine development and help you cope with infections. Spinach is a natural source of folate. Including spinach in your diet can ensure proper development and weight gain for your baby during pregnancy.

Fruit and Vegetables

Incorporate vegetables and fruits into every meal to ensure you consume foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Adding a generous serving of salad to each meal and consuming a medium-sized banana as a snack can provide essential nutrients for both you and your baby.

Walnut

The omega-3 fatty acids in walnuts support your baby’s eye and brain development. Regular consumption of walnuts during pregnancy can reduce the risk of inflammation in blood vessels. Adding two whole walnuts to your daily diet can provide essential nutrients for your baby’s development.

Dairy Products

Include dairy and dairy products in your daily diet to promote your baby’s growth and ensure adequate weight gain. Dairy products are rich in calcium, crucial for your baby’s developing bones. Incorporating yogurt into your main meals and opting for probiotic-rich foods like kefir for snacks can aid digestion and provide essential nutrients for your baby’s development.

Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin seeds are high in iron and zinc, addressing common iron deficiency issues during pregnancy. You can easily incorporate pumpkin seeds into your diet by adding them to morning oatmeal or blending them into snacks.

Meat

Increase protein intake slightly as pregnancy progresses, especially after the 20th week. Meat and meat products are rich sources of iron, supporting your baby’s development. Fish promotes brain and eye development in your baby. Consuming fish at least twice a week is recommended, but avoid bottom-dwelling fish and opt for baking or grilling for healthier preparation methods.

Other Foods for Your Baby’s Development and Weight Gain During Pregnancy

Avocado

Broccoli

Lentil

What you should be mindful of is opting for whole-grain products. If you prefer not to consume bread with your meal, you can consider having 3-4 tablespoons of rice as a slice of bread is equivalent to 3-4 tablespoons of rice.

If you have further questions, you can share your experience in the comment.

Have a healthy day!

Leggings Dark and supple (or a few) leggings will never fail you. You can look very stylish when you pull your boots on these...

Leggings

Dark and supple (or a few) leggings will never fail you. You can look very stylish when you pull your boots on these leggings, which provide comfort even when your belly is on the biggest. Although there are “pregnant” leggings specially made for pregnant women on the market, many mothers say they are unnecessary. You can get regular leggings in larger sizes as your size grows so you can enjoy these leggings longer, considering your belly, which you may not have gotten rid of right away after giving birth. As your belly grows, it will be sufficient to lower the waistline below your tummy for more comfort.

Tunic

These loose-fitting blouses that go down to the hips are very useful. (The length of most tunics, depending on your height, is up to the lower part of your hips.) In addition to showing the body lines better, Tunics also has excellent, subtle details such as three-quarter sleeves, side slits, and V-neck. It can use as a dress before pregnancy; In the later stages of your pregnancy, you can combine it with leggings or wear it over your slim-fit jeans. After your baby is born, you will enjoy the loose and comfortable fit; the extra fabric can also be used as a cover to protect your privacy while breastfeeding.

Maxi Dress

Maxi dresses have become appealing to women of all ages for a good reason. The explanation for those is not necessary: These are dresses with a flared skirt that draw attention to your collarbone, shoulders, and decollete. Choose a soft jersey fabric that comfortably hugs your changing body. Experts state that this is an outfit that you do not need to buy from the maternity clothes section, you can find them in all the stores and you can choose to wear this loose-fitting long dress during any period of your pregnancy, as long as you can find one made of stretchy fabric.

Long Swim Cut Athlete

You can never get enough of buying one of these essential items, no matter how many you have in your closet, but when you’re looking for a durable and well-fitting athlete, don’t hesitate to spend your money on the best you can find.

Choose undershirts with shirring on the side, made of flexible microfiber fabric blends with thick straps that can hide your bra and adapt to the growth and shrinkage of your breasts. The side-shirred part will shape your body in the first trimester and make your belly look smaller after birth. The longer it is, the better it will cover your tummy and hips; Especially if you plan to combine your tank top with leggings or slim-fit jeans, it will be more beneficial. You can wear it under any clothing or alone.

Asymmetric Wide Cut Cardigan

Classic cardigans never go out of style; the more asymmetrical cuts provide more flexibility in your pregnancy. Neither the tedious and tight-fitting buttons nor the thin transparent fabric reveals more than you want to show. Instead of these, for example, you can wear a plain or button-up cardigan with an asymmetric cut in the front and close to the collar, open front, or loosely closed. Here is a stylish and shabby piece that you can wear comfortably in all seasons. Those knitted with thicker wool will come in handy both in the fall and spring when you want to pack something light.

Straight Cut Dress

The classic lightweight A-line straight dress (that is, the upper part does not fit the body well and expands slightly downwards) is a dress that does not reveal the body lines and has a youthful air that is suitable for almost all body types, especially new mothers and pregnant women. Before pregnancy, it will gently surround your curves. During the pregnancy, it will give your growing belly a comfortable space and make your legs come to the fore. Dresses with a deep round neckline and even thin straps are great options. As soon as you hold your baby in your arms, it is possible to continue to wear one of these dresses!

A Stylish Scarf

Yes, admittedly, it is not considered a stand-alone outfit. Still, this piece, which has managed to be the most popular of the multi-purpose accessories that help create various styles by experts, adds elegance to many monochrome outfits or can expand the range of clothes in your closet that you are getting tired of with a single touch! Patterned silk scarves, richly detailed necklaces, stylish earrings, or whatever you like to accessorize will make the combinations extraordinary.

Also, wearing a long necklace on a loose-fitting blouse or tunic before your pregnancy restrains the fabric, making you look slimmer. Another plus of the scarf: you can turn it into a nursing cover after your baby is born, a blanket for a nap in the park, or a curtain as a temporary solution to protect the stroller from the sun.

Wrap Dress

If you don’t have a baby in your belly yet, a classic wrap dress is exquisite and effortless. As your body begins to change, tie the waistband of the dress a little higher to accentuate your fading waistline. You can prefer jerseys or other flexible fabric that blends and will expand as your belly grows but regain its former form when it shrinks. If dresses are not for you, wrap-over style double-breasted blouses are also a great option that can be preferred at any time of pregnancy.

Would you like to share your experiences and questions as a comment?

Wishing you well!

Pregnants eagerly await the moment when they will hold their little babies in their arms until they are born. This excitement reaches even higher levels as you get the prenatal needs for you and the tiny baby in your womb.

When your belly starts to grow, you may want to buy new clothes for yourself. If you are expecting a baby, we can guess that you bought dozens of baby clothes and imagine your baby in these clothes. This must be a very good feeling!

You need to complete your preparations completely to spend the prenatal period and the moment of birth perfectly and solve every problem you encounter safely.

You need to create an accurate prenatal essentials list to have everything you need and will have at hand when you are pregnant, and to make your job easier it is helpful to make up for your shortcomings under two separate headings, primarily the mother and baby needs list.

Prenatal Needs List for Mother

In order for you to have a problem-free pregnancy period, it is very important to be physically healthy after giving birth. You should not neglect your personal care both during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

To meet these conditions, all the materials you will need are as follows:

Especially the puerperal pads that you will need right after the birth can also be used as puerperal panties.

Postpartum pads will help you after delivery, especially since they can be torn off from the sides and worn as underwear.

A nursing bra makes breastfeeding easier for mother and baby.

Clothes suitable for postpartum body structure; puerperal panties, nursing bras, nursing vests and bodysuits.

To be physically healthy and comfortable:

The first condition is that you feel comfortable. For this, you can choose clothes that do not sweat, cotton and flexible fabric. You should buy clothes such as shirts-blouses, dresses, nightgowns, pajama sets, t-shirts and sweatshirts that will not compress and press your breasts and abdomen.

Again for your comfort, you should buy adjustable and flexible clothes such as skirts, leggings, tracksuits and trousers so that you can wear them in the later months of pregnancy.

Your comfortable underwear is just as important as your outerwear.

From the 1st month of pregnancy, until you prepare a delivery bag and go to the hospital, you should buy a sufficient number of panties, under-belly panties, puerperal panties, corsets, dressing gowns, nursing bras, nursing straps, nursing bodysuits and socks.

The fact that these products are made of natural products such as cotton and bamboo is essential in not sweating while being flexible is necessary for your comfort.

For a Problem-Free Breastfeeding

First of all, your milk should come in sufficient quantity, and milk boosting drinks are exactly what you need for sufficient milk production.

A breast pump and a milk storage bag/container are required to express the incoming milk and store it under suitable conditions. To be able to breastfeed your baby safely and comfortably, it should include a nursing gown, nursing mat and nipple cream in the baby’s essentials list.

For Personal Care

The prenatal needs list should contain the most basic materials necessary for the expectant mother to feel good and happy.

These materials:

Anti-stretch cream so you can easily return to your old form

Postpartum pad to protect you safely

Mother-baby care bag that saves life both in your long and short trips

Mother-baby care backpack

Supportive pillow/cushion for sleep comfort

Pregnant sleep support pillow

Pregnant waist support band and pregnant seat belt for a safe journey

Shopping List for Newborn Baby

The majority of the materials that will be required before birth are the materials of your little baby.

The shopping list for the newborn baby contains the products that you should buy and have ready before birth and that you will need in the first place when your little one is born.

These products provide ease of shopping, we will categorize them as nutrition, clothing and textile, bathroom and care, baby room, tools and equipment products.

Baby clothing

All of the textiles your baby wears or comes into contact with must be made of natural products such as 100% cotton, bamboo or linen.

For your baby to move freely, the product fabric should be flexible, and the product model should be wide cut. In the shopping list for the newborn baby:

When you find out that you will have a baby, a little fear fills you with happiness. This fear may include concerns about your baby’s future, caring for him, or whether you can be a good mother. At the same time, the very moment of birth may seem frightening to you.

Vaginal birth is a form of birth that many women shy away from, and the first thing that comes to mind when talking about normal birth is labour and vaginal incision. However, a vaginal incision called episiotomy is not applied in every normal delivery. Breathing exercises to facilitate labour and perineal massage will change your perspective on birth.

What is perineal massage? What benefits does it have for pregnant women? When and how is it done? We have compiled the answers to all these questions for you.

What is Perineum?

The thin area between the vagina and the anus is called the perineum. The perineum is an area with a diameter of about 3 cm, and it supports pelvic floor muscles, reproductive organs and intestines. Therefore, the control of urine and faeces is under the management of the perineal region.

During vaginal delivery, as the baby’s head and body protrude, an above-normal stretch occurs in the perineum. This stretch can cause uncontrolled vaginal tears in the area. To prevent such ruptures from occurring, it is sometimes necessary to make an incision in the perineal area during delivery. The incision is made by cutting the lower wall of the vagina and the pelvic muscles by about 3-4 cm. This incision is called an episiotomy. Episiotomy is a useful application that prevents self-tearing of the perineum when necessary and prevents tears that are difficult to heal. However, if the area has sufficient elasticity, an incision may not be required.

What is Perineal Massage?

The massage application performed with the help of fingers by using some oils to relax and stretch the muscles in the perineal region is called perineal massage.

Perineal massage is done by stretching the inner tissues of the lower part of the vagina. When these tissues are stretched with massage, less pain is felt during the baby’s passage, and the risk of rupture in the perineum is reduced.

Benefits of Perineal Massage

Many studies have shown that compared to pregnant women who apply perineal massage and those who do not, episiotomy is less needed in pregnant women who do massage. For this reason, experts recommend this massage from the last stages of pregnancy.

The benefits of perineal massage for pregnant women are as follows;

Prepares the perineal tissue for birth: The perineal structure is much tenser, especially in first births, since it does not reach sufficient flexibility. This massage helps to relax the internal tissues and make them ready for delivery.

Prevents uncontrolled tearing: The width of the cervix shows an opening of about 10 cm at birth to allow the baby to pass. However, the baby’s head region may force the surrounding thin tissue during the transition. If adequate flexibility is not available or episiotomy is not performed, difficult-to-repair ruptures may occur in the perineal area. Perineal massage gives flexibility to the area and prevents these tears.

Reduces the need for episiotomy: There are different types of episiotomies. The incision can be made at different angles and at different depths, depending on the situation. A minor incision is required with the perineal massage.

Relieves labour pains: This massage, which helps to relax the perineal muscles, provides relief from tension-related pains.

Facilitates vaginal delivery: With perineal massage, the muscles gain sufficient flexibility, and an easier vaginal delivery occurs.

Motivates the expectant mother: Pregnant women who are prepared for birth with perineal massage reduce their fear of birth because they feel more ready for birth.

Who Should Do This Massage?

It is unnecessary to have this massage done by a specialist or doctor to stretch the pelvic muscles. Perineal massage can be easily applied at home, and the expectant mother can apply herself if she wishes.

However, the growing abdomen in the last stages of pregnancy does not allow to continue the massage sufficiently. In such cases, pregnant women may seek help from their spouses. In short, the expectant mother or spouse can do the massage.

How to Do Perineal Massage?

Perineal massage is not a type of massage with very technical movements. For this reason, anyone can easily apply it.

So how is a perineal massage done?

First, start the massage with an empty bladder. If you have urine, do it.

Then, wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before the massage. If your nails are long, shorten them.

Choose a safe and comfortable area for the massage. It can be done in the bedroom, on your bed or in the bathroom.

Find a suitable position. Choose a position where you can easily reach the perineum while standing, with one foot placed on a high object, in the shower in the tub, lying on the bed with legs spread and knees bent, squatting, semi-sitting position, in short.

Rub olive oil, almond oil, coconut oil or any aromatic oil or mixture of your choice on your fingers to ensure lubricity. Warm the fingers by rubbing them together.

Insert the thumbs of both hands into the vagina up to the second knuckle (Approximately 4-5 cm).

Feel the posterior wall of the vagina with your fingers. Start rubbing this area and the sides with light movements.

Move the fingers to the right and left, positioning them at 3 and 9 o’clock and forming a U shape.

If your partner is doing the massage, tell them to use their index fingers and have them do the same movements.

Since there is no flexibility in the beginning, there may be difficulties. Don’t force yourself, and you will feel the tissue loosen and open as the progress of movement.

Take care not to exceed 10 minutes while doing the massage.

When is Perineal Massage Given?

As the time to hold your baby in your arms approaches, the importance of the practices that will facilitate the birth begins to increase. For this reason, expectant mothers may wonder about the ideal time to start the perineal massage.

You can start perineal massage from the 34th week of pregnancy, and the application should be continued until birth, at least 3-4 times a week. The ideal time for massage is between 5-10 minutes.

What is the Success Rate of Perineal Massage?

Although the researches have had remarkable results about the advantages of massage, this success also depends on different factors. The skin structure of the pregnant, the large size of the baby and various complications that may occur at birth may cause the need for episiotomy in the pregnant despite the massage.

If the success rate is mentioned; in a study comparing 50 pregnant women who received perineal massage and 50 pregnant women who did not, it was seen that only 5 of 50 pregnant women who received massage needed a vaginal incision. In comparison, a vaginal incision was made in 46 of 50 pregnant women who were not massaged. In short, this result reveals how beneficial perineal massage is in normal birth and episiotomy.

Pregnants approaching their last weeks can get information about perineal massage by consulting their doctors and start applying it as soon as possible. But every pregnancy is different, and some special circumstances may hinder the application.

For this reason, you should definitely get your doctor’s approval beforehand.
